The home care services at Muurame municipality were offered the chance to participate in the Smila pilot project from March to August 2021. Now, as the pilot project has crossed the finish line, the benefits of the service are well known to the service provider and to the home care clients.

The main reason why the Muurame home care services wanted to get on board was a challenge well known to everyone: the number of elderly people is increasing, but the number of carers is not.

Home care desperately needs more ways of handling visits more flexibly. A medication robot allows elderly people to have much more independence and mobility, so house calls can be flexibly arranged and even done less frequently, says Sira Salo, home care supervisor in Muurame.

The device is easy to learn and easy to use

The medication robots in the pilot were principally assigned to home care clients who had challenges in remembering to take their medications. From the service provider’s perspective, the issue was whether house calls could be arranged more flexibly, independently of the times when the clients had to take their medications.

Once the clients selected for the pilot had given their consent, they were instructed on how to use the medication robot, step by step. At the first dispensing, staff from Muurame home care services were present to assist.

It is particularly important for Muurame home services that both employees and clients find the device easy to use:

It’s a simple thing and doesn’t require extensive training. Even substitutes can be trained up in a matter of minutes.

Technical support has always been easily available at the Smila care services help desk. Aiming to increase the number of medication robots. The Smila devices have delighted home care clients at Muurame:

Many have been excited about this new contraption. They like that it talks to them and flashes smiley faces, says Sira with pleasure.

Clients have been delighted to use Smila

She also notes that clients have enjoyed successful experiences in learning a new way to do things. Given the positive experiences from the pilot, Muurame home care services definitely want to go on using the Smila care service offered by Tamro. They want to introduce more devices for more elderly residents in the future.

Muurame home care services have some 90 clients, many of whom would benefit a lot from Smila. The precise number of devices needed will be estimated according to individual client situations and needs.

The principal benefits for us are that the device is reliable and easy to use. It’s a win-win for the clients and for us, so obviously we want to continue using the Smila care service here at Muurame, says Salo.
